Paring knives are a very useful knife that everybody needs to have in their kitchen. They have a blade that is small and sharp and are designed for carving, cutting, peeling, and doing various food preparation jobs in the kitchen. They are very easy to control and thus they are one of the most useful types of knifes you may have in your kitchen.
A paring knife is perfect for slicing fruits and making thin slices of different types of vegetables. Also they are perfect for peeling fruits and vegetables. Some cooks prefer a paring knife to the peelers for carrots, cucumbers and potatoes. Paring knives give the professional chefs more control than the standard peeler.
For the more creative cooks that prefer to make decorative garnishes for the appealing presentation, sharp paring knives are the perfect tool for the job. Big sharp knives just do not provide the control needed to do the job. The paring knife is perfect for a lot of situations, de-vein shrimp or just cutting up small peppers and removing the seeds.
Having small blade paring knives can dull easily. They need to be kept sharp and in good shape because they make life easier in the kitchen. Keep them sharp with a good quality knife sharpener or sharpening stone so the paring knife is always ready for use.
As with most kitchen cutlery your paring knives should be stored in a knife block. Just throwing them in the drawer with the other utensils make them dull and chipped and make them difficult to use.
It is just safer with a knife block! Or use a knife guard made of plastic, cardboard or leather to store your blades in to save you from a lot of minor finger cuts. Not to mention preserving the sharpness of the blades. A good wood cutting board will also serve to help keep the sharpness of your knives. Other hard surfaces like glass or marble will make your paring knives dull very fast.
It is important to always hand-wash your kitchen cutlery by hand to preserve sharpness and possible oxidation. Dishwashers will damage good knives a number of ways. First it is the water jets power with small particles can damage blades by denting them. Second the drying cycles use heat that will cause oxidation that will damage your good cutlery. A professional chef will hand wash and sharpen and dry their knives every night to keep the tools of the trade in tip top shape.
